How to Prepare Your Home for a Flooring Installation

A little prep before install day makes the whole project faster, cleaner, and less stressful — for you and the crew. None of it is complicated. Here is a simple checklist to get your home ready before the flooring goes in.

Clear the rooms

• Remove furniture, rugs, floor lamps, and anything sitting on the floor. If you need a hand with heavy pieces, tell us ahead of time so we can plan for it.
• Take items off low shelves and out of closets in the work area — sanding and installation create fine dust that settles on open surfaces.
• Take down wall art and mirrors in the rooms being worked on; vibration and moving materials can knock loose hangings off the wall.

Protect what stays

• Cover or relocate electronics and anything you would rather keep dust-free. We use containment, but electronics and dust are never friends.
• Empty or move china cabinets and glass-front furniture if they cannot leave the room.
• Plan a clear, protected path from the door to the work area so materials can come in without scuffing other floors or walls.

Let the materials acclimate

Wood and many other flooring products need to sit in your home for a period before installation so they adjust to your indoor temperature and humidity. This step matters — it helps prevent gaps or buckling later. We will coordinate delivery timing with you so the material is acclimated and ready on install day. Keeping your home at normal, steady temperature and humidity during this window helps.

Plan for dust, noise, and access

• Sanding and cutting are dusty and loud. If you work from home, set up in a room away from the action, or plan to be out during the noisiest stretches.
• Keep pets and small children out of the work zone — there are tools, nails, and open finishes around.
• Make sure the crew can reach a parking spot and an outlet, and that any gate or entry codes are shared in advance.

A few day-of tips

• Decide where furniture will go back so there is no scramble at the end.
• If finish is being applied, ask us when the floor can take foot traffic and when to move furniture back — moving it too soon is the most common way new floors get marked up.
• Have a plan for pets during finishing, since odor and dry times matter.
